Escalation and Stronghold Assault...

Got to try an Escalation / Stronghold Assault game last night that went quite well. We 'house-ruled' several little things but overall it ran pretty smoothly. From the Apocalypse book we used the Warhound Titan rules, and we had to come up with some 'counts-as' improvisations for some of the terrain.  Here are a few pics:

A fuzzy picture of the board before the game...

Deployment (Blood Angels versus Dark Angels & Grey Knights with Titan)...

Here are the 3 primary objectives, and the basic narrative was; The capsule in the middle of the fortress contained some secrets, obviously regarding the traitorous Dark Angels. Dante meaning to expose these secrets needs just enough time (6 turns?) at just the right planetary orbit to transmit a message... the Dark Angels however manage to convince the Grey Knights to come do some dying while they prevent Dante from turning them out...

The Death Company and Death Company Dreadnought are eagerly waiting to kill anything that comes through that gate/wall...

The wall has been breached and from the battlements a single devastator and Corbulo's combat squad remain...

These were more-or-less the final throes:

The game ended on turn 6 and the attackers had not yet claimed any of the objectives, though they had wiped most of the Blood Angels off the board. Had this gone another turn they would have taken it all.

This was a really fun game; it was certainly casual and as the 'defender' I know that the two Attackers took it rather easy on me - not to mention I had 1410 points worth of Fortifications that gave me access to weapons I would not normally have.  Turn-1 I put a licking on the Titan and I thought it might go down early in the game, but it managed to survive and deal some serious death.  I'd be more than happy to try this type of game again...

And check out the Lazarus Effect for a more pictures!

  1. That game was the most enjoyable and cinematic I've had in 6th edition yet, I can't wait until we can do another one and get more people involved. I had no idea escalation/stronghold assault would be even close to that much fun.

    1. Cinematic is the perfect word ...yeah that was a lot of fun. I think even just having a loose narrative plot made it that much more engaging. I wish we took a lot more pictures hah.

How is that Titan coming along?!?

    2. We need a follow up to this one. I'm thinking some zone mortalis might be in order. The Dark Angels have to board the imperial ships that have come to aid the Blood Angels, and get into some brutal close-quarters fighting.

    3. Sounds - awesome! ...do any of you guys have suitable terrain for ZM? We could always just make do of course.

I also have a soon to be revealed surprise that could have a major effect on this narrative, and also perhaps explain the unreliable communications...
